IDA's New Definition of Dyslexia

Posted By: Cheryl Cook ALDS Blog,

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) has released a new definition of dyslexia which is the first update since 2002. This revised definition was unveiled at the 2025 IDA Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, where I had the opportunity to attend the session and learn more about the thoughtful process behind the updated language, as well as a detailed explanation of each component of the definition.

While this new definition is unlikely to significantly change the work already happening in our ALDS schools, it does carry important implications. Updates to language can influence how dyslexia is understood, discussed, identified, and supported, particularly in conversations with families, educators, and external partners. Staying informed will help ensure our schools remain aligned with current research and best practices while continuing to center the needs of students.

ALDS is committed to supporting our member schools as they navigate this update and has gathered resources to help schools better understand the new definition and consider its potential impact on identification and student support. We encourage our community to engage with these materials thoughtfully and use them as a tool for reflection and conversation, rather than as a signal for immediate change. As always, ALDS remains focused on advancing effective, student-centered practices and supporting schools in the important work they do every day.

IDA has curated a brief explanation for each of the major changes and added it to their Dyslexia Definition Project Web page.
